Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT review - enterprise fund accounting

What it is

Financial Edge NXT is Blackbaud’s cloud fund accounting platform for nonprofits: true restricted-fund, grant, and endowment tracking, FASB-compliant reporting, and strong internal controls. It is built for larger organizations and the auditors and funders they answer to.

The honest math

Pricing is quote-only and not published. Public reports put subscriptions anywhere from several hundred to over a thousand dollars a month depending on users and modules, plus an implementation project that can run into five figures, on 1, 3, or 5-year terms. This is an enterprise line item, not a small-org expense.

Why the amber rating

The software is best-in-class for what it does, but it is enterprise pricing and complexity - custom quotes, sales cycles, contracts, and paid onboarding. Blackbaud’s own guidance and independent reviewers steer organizations under roughly $2 million in revenue toward Aplos or QuickBooks instead. For our audience it is overkill on both cost and complexity, which is why it lands at amber on fit.

The honest take

If you are a large, compliance-heavy nonprofit with many restricted funds and a board that expects FASB financials, this is the serious answer. For nearly every small nonprofit it is more system than the mission needs - start with Aplos or donated QuickBooks.
