What it is

GitHub is where software gets built and stored: version control and collaboration for code, but also a capable home for documentation, data, and any project that benefits from history and review. If your nonprofit builds or maintains anything technical - a website, scripts, a data pipeline - this is the standard place to keep it.

The honest math

Qualifying nonprofits get GitHub Team for free, which normally costs per user per month. That free grant includes unlimited private repositories, unlimited collaborators, and the full Team feature set - not a stripped-down version. If you need the heavier compliance and security tooling, GitHub Enterprise Cloud is offered at 25% off rather than free.

How eligibility works

You apply directly through the GitHub for Nonprofits portal. GitHub either matches you against a validated database automatically or asks for your country of registration, registration ID, and proof of nonprofit status. The eligibility rule is strict about type: you must be a 501(c)(3) or international equivalent that is nongovernmental, nonacademic, noncommercial, and nonpolitical. One specific carve-out to know: religious or faith-based organizations in India are ineligible.

The honest take
