What it is
Google Ad Grants gives eligible nonprofits up to $10,000 per month in in-kind Google Search advertising, which works out to roughly $120,000 a year. It is part of Google for Nonprofits, and it is the single highest-value free program most small organizations will ever qualify for. The money can only be spent on text Search ads inside the grant account, not on YouTube, Display, or a paid Google Ads account.
What it costs and how to qualify
The grant itself is free. Eligibility runs through Goodstack (formerly Percent), the same validation partner Google uses across its nonprofit programs, so if you have already been verified once the process is quick. Governments, hospitals, and most schools are excluded and have their own programs.
The catch: compliance is strict and ongoing
This is not a set-and-forget grant. To keep it active, an account has to stay inside a real list of rules, and Google will pause accounts that drift out of them. The current requirements include:
- A minimum 5% account-level click-through rate. Fall below it for two consecutive months and the account is subject to deactivation.
- Every active keyword must hold a Quality Score of 3 or higher. Scores of 1 or 2 have to be paused or removed.
- No single-word or overly generic keywords (narrow exceptions aside).
- Mandatory Smart Bidding (Maximize Conversions is the common choice) - manual CPC is no longer allowed.
- Working conversion tracking, with at least one meaningful conversion reported per month.
- A high-quality, secure website that clearly reflects your mission.
Who should be careful
Any organization can claim the grant, but keeping it healthy takes real, recurring work: keyword research, ad copy, landing pages, and monthly tuning against that 5% floor. Plenty of nonprofits activate it, breach compliance within a few months, and quietly lose it. Setting it up and managing it well is genuinely hard, which is exactly the gap our done-for-you service fills. The grant is free and yours to keep either way.
The honest take
Claim it. Nothing else on this site comes close to the value. Just go in knowing the grant rewards ongoing attention and punishes neglect, and plan for who is going to run it each month. There is no affiliate relationship here - Google does not pay us to recommend this, it is simply the best free program available to a small nonprofit.
